It should come as no surprise that most Millennials (born between 1981 and 1996) prefer “smart locks” over traditional keys. Raised on technology, 86% of millennials recently surveyed for a national lock manufacturer (Schlage) also said they were willing to pay about one-fifth more in rent to secure a smart apartment featuring electronic locking devices, automated thermostats and/or lighting controls. But wait there’s more! 61% said they are likely to rent an apartment specifically because of its electronic access features including keyless entry doors. 55% said they are likely to pay more for an apartment that has “high-tech” door locks. If this sounds like you, you are probably a millennial or maybe not. A lot of Gen Xer’s and Baby Boomers have embraced the technology to end the hassle of getting locked out or losing the house keys as well as granting temporary access to workers or guests while away.
Whether you are a landlord hoping to “cash in” on the lure of electronic security devices for your rental units, or a homeowner interested in convenience paired with security, you will find a vast array of electronic devices now flooding the market. Like many regular locks, some come with flimsy parts that can be defeated by a crafty criminal armed with a cordless drill or a strong kick. Sacrificing security just so you are able to operate a lock with a numerical code or your smartphone could leave your property vulnerable. So how do you know which to choose? Start by sticking with a respected manufacturer; and then checking to see if the electronic locking device is an appropriate replacement for your current lock. Does it align with your current deadbolt, key lock or door handle? Is it simple enough to install while still providing the strength you need to feel safe? If the answer is “yes” to all those questions – you can probably proceed but if you’re unsure, maybe a locksmith is what you need.
At Sure Fit Security, we have the experience to recommend the right electronic locking system for your home or business. Licensed by the State of Maryland, we feature electronic locking devices and electronic access control products (from respected manufacturers) designed for security, ease of use, ease of installation and integration with other devices. For landlords, we can install devices on multiple units to end the hassle of tenants losing or not returning keys; along with the convenience of “changing codes” to enhance security when renting to a new tenant and/or to bar entry in the case of eviction.
While the demand for electronic locking devices will continue to grow among young people (as well as rental property owners and tech-savvy homeowners), one group that should not be overlooked is the elderly. When installed and used properly, electronic locking devices can provide seniors with peace-of-mind by allowing family members easy access to their homes when needed; as well as home health aides or other helpers who need to gain access to a client’s home during the workday. When calling 911, a code can also be given to rescue workers to gain access without having to break down a locked door. Not only saving time to reach a person in distress, electronic access will also avoid damage and the added repair or replacement of a damaged door.
